چکیده

Abstract Statistical data on aircraft collisions with birds of prey (Falconiformes and Accipitriformes) are analyzed. The basis the analysis was results study at Severtsov Institute Ecology Evolution, Russian Academy Sciences (IPEE RAS). reasons factors attracting to airfields considered. Helminth Communities of Owls (Strigiformes) Indicate Strong Biological and Ecological Differences from Birds of Prey (Accipitriformes and Falconiformes) in Southern Italy

We compared the helminth communities of 5 owl species from Calabria (Italy) and evaluated the effect of phylogenetic and ecological factors on community structure. Two host taxonomic scales were considered, i.e., owl species, and owls vs. birds of prey. The latter scale was dealt with by comparing the data here obtained with that of birds of prey from the same locality and with those published ...

Fatal injuries to birds from collisions with aircraft reveal antipredator behaviours

Between 1990 and 2008, more than 87 000 bird–aircraft collisions (hereafter, bird strikes) were reported to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and represented more than US$600 million in direct and indirect costs to US civil aviation annually (Dolbeer et al. 2009). Worldwide, the costs to civil aviation associated with bird strikes exceed US$1.2 billion annually (Allan & Orosz 2001). ...

Phylogeny, historical biogeography and the evolution of migration in accipitrid birds of prey (Aves: Accipitriformes)

Migration plays a fundamental part in the life of most temperate bird species. The re gu lar, largescale seasonal movements that characterize temperate migration systems appear to have originated in parallel with the postglacial northern expansion of tropical species. Migratoriness is also influenced by a number of ecological factors, such as the ability to survive harsh winters. Hence, under...

Captive wild birds as reservoirs of enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) and Shiga-toxin producing E. coli (STEC)

Psittacine birds have been identified as reservoirs of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli, a subset of pathogens associated with mortality of children in tropical countries. The role of other orders of birds as source of infection is unclear. The aim of this study was to perform the molecular diagnosis of infection with diarrheagenic E. coli in 10 different orders of captive wild birds in the state...
